Description

Join the mission to launch Cybercab, Tesla's fully autonomous Robotaxi, on the most advanced automotive manufacturing lines in the world. As a CNC Manufacturing Process Engineer, you won't just support the machines. You will own the machining process.

You run, sustain, and improve the machining process and the Grob and Vigel CNC equipment that cut new and existing parts. This is floor work, with engineers, technicians, and production associates, through a high-stakes production ramp few people in the industry will ever see. People come in with a strength, usually CNC programming or 3D CAD, and learn the rest of the job from the team: tooling, fixtures, the machine, and the quality system.

These are production machines, not a programming exercise. You choose cost-effective tooling and improve the tooling already in use. You propose the concept, the cost, and the cycle time, then set speeds, feeds, and tooling and run the DOEs until the process meets Cpk. You cut cycle time, downtime, and scrap. When the job needs it, you set the production tooling and run the equipment yourself. Hours follow production.

This is an opportunity to own a world-class machining process, hold tolerance at Tesla rate, and help turn the most ambitious vehicle Tesla has ever built into reality at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Own machining process design for new and existing products, and lead the production team until the process meets the engineering specification
  • Run feasibility studies. Propose the machining concept, the cost, and the cycle time for new work, and carry those numbers from concept through the ramp
  • Specify, design, and manage capital equipment, fixtures, and cutting tools with suppliers. Work with Equipment Engineering and vendors when a fixture or machine has to be corrected
  • Select tooling, review tooling already in use, and keep spares and backups for fixture components and cutting tools. Own the inventory of cutting tools, consumables, and fixture components
  • Design and run DOEs. Set speeds, feeds, and tooling until the process meets Cpk
  • Cut cycle time, downtime, and scrap. Lead root cause on machining defects and on scrap found downstream, using structured problem-solving (DMAIC, 8D, 5-Why)
  • Own the machining documentation: standardized work, work instructions, and the machining content for advanced quality planning, including FMEAs, control plans, and manufacturing instructions
  • Train engineering technicians, production associates, and operators. Review first-piece and last-piece inspection, and correct the process when the part is out of spec

Requirements

  • A degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • At least one year in production machining, and a working command of machining processes and CNC machines
  • The ability to read, write, and use G-code. GD&T and print reading
  • Judgment in choosing tooling, and in seeing what to change on tooling already in the crib
  • Willingness to set tooling and run the machine. Hours follow production
  • SolidWorks or CATIA, and CAM experience, preferred
  • Sharp problem-solving using DMAIC, Ishikawa, 5-Why, or 8D, and clear communication across engineering, suppliers, and production
  • A bias for the floor and for continuous improvement. Experience launching or scaling a machining process in a high-volume environment is a plus
