Critical Environment Industrial Controls Systems Engineer

As an Industrial Controls Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority for the industrial control systems that monitor and operate Microsoft’s mission-critical datacenter infrastructure.
You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, security, and performance of building automation, power monitoring, and telemetry systems that support critical electrical and mechanical operations. Working closely with operations, engineering, construction, cybersecurity, and global platform teams, you will help deliver resilient datacenter services at hyperscale while driving continuous improvement and innovation across the ICS environment.
Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As an Industrial Controls Engineer you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform.

Responsibilities
- Maintaining ICS availability, data quality, service and change management, reporting, and the security of all ICS systems in the Data Centers.
- Site level ICS program and project management, and both govern and directly participate in the execution of global initiatives related to ICS systems.
- Managing, servicing, and governing Microsoft’s electrical and mechanical industrial control systems (ICS) to include servers, applications, networks, and device infrastructure deployed within Microsoft’s 24x7x365 mission-critical datacenters.
- Governing logical and physical access, approval, and permissions related to all ICS systems, networks, workstations, and servers that provide datacenter monitoring and controls.
- Empowering a culture of safety and security in global datacenter operations by complying with CO+I’s safety programs and policies and completing compliance knowledge assessments.
- Developing positive working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or related field AND technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, systems engineering, or industrial controls OR equivalent experience.
Background Check Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience supporting industrial control systems in critical environments.
- Experience operating, maintaining, designing, commissioning, or troubleshooting Industrial Control Systems (ICS) within mission-critical facilities, including familiarity with protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.
- Working knowledge of datacenter electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including power distribution, grounding, fire alarm, HVAC, chilled water, refrigeration, and associated control systems.
- Experience supporting or managing industrial control platforms such as Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), Branch Circuit Monitoring (BCM), or Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS), with the ability to interpret construction drawings and support infrastructure projects.
Service Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across Netherlands is € 59,600.00 - € 102,600.00 per year. Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
