Description

As a Data Center Operations Controls Engineer at Apple, you will lead Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) controls strategy, programming, system optimization, and technical standards with minimal guidance. You will assess complex operational issues and act as a key contributor to cross-organization initiatives involving complex, ambiguous problems. You will evaluate operational telemetry and drive scalable solutions to optimize Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), cooling efficiency, and control loop dynamics across chilled water plants and power distribution systems. You will serve as the root-cause investigations (RCA) lead for high-severity controls incidents, review and approve project engineering designs, and lead complex retrofit projects. Collaborating with peers, cross-functional engineering leads, operations managers, and equipment vendors, you will drive continuous improvement, evaluate emerging control technologies, and ensure alignment with Apple’s highest reliability and safety benchmarks.

Responsibilities

• Drive the operational strategy and programming standards of campus-wide controls systems to safeguard 100% facility availability
• Architect, program, validate, and implement complex, multi-tiered control logic and advanced fail-safe sequences directly on live production systems without risk to critical loads
• Evaluate operational telemetry and drive scalable engineering solutions to optimize Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), cooling efficiency, and control loop dynamics across central chiller plants and power distribution systems
• Serve as the primary Root Cause Analysis (RCA) lead for high-severity controls incidents, writing comprehensive forensic engineering reports and developing fleet-wide corrective actions
• Review and evaluate capital project engineering submittals, control narratives, and Sequence of Operations (SOO) for new construction and large-scale retrofit programs
• Act as a key contributor to cross-organizational initiatives geared towards solving operational challenges
• Mentor peers on advanced control strategies, complex troubleshooting and emergency operations

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Technology, or a related field, with 5+ years of experience; OR Master’s degree with 4+ years of experience; OR 7+ years of equivalent experience in industrial controls.
• 4+ years of direct experience programming, configuring, testing, and troubleshooting PLC, DDC, or SCADA control platforms within mission-critical or hyperscale data center environments.
• Experience leading control system commissioning or retrofit projects on live critical systems.
• Experience applying control system design principles, including system architecture, networking, component integration, and lifecycle management.
• Experience leading root-cause failure investigations and authoring detailed technical reports.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of hands-on field experience within mission-critical or hyperscale data center environments
• Expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining control systems.
• Advanced proficiency in engineering software tools, including AutoCAD and Revit
• Experience maintaining virtualized controls servers, high-availability clusters, and enterprise InfoSec/cybersecurity compliance standards
