About the Opportunity

The Lund section of Research Area Compute and Software is a team of 11 working on distributed systems, reliability, real-time computing and standardization. We operate a state-of-the-art OpenStack cloud and compute environment used around the clock by hundreds of Ericsson and academic users. It is both a reliable service and our primary research testbed.

You will bridge systems operations and academic inquiry: keep the infrastructure performant and reliable through daily operations while contributing to research on cloud architectures, virtualization, AI-driven operations (AIOps) and software execution environments. You will use operational challenges to inform research, and hands-on experiments and prototypes to evaluate new system concepts. The role calls for practical engineering, debugging and active systems management alongside scientific curiosity—not theory alone.

What You Will Do

  • Operate and evolve the OpenStack cloud and compute environment used by Ericsson and academic researchers.
  • Troubleshoot complex distributed systems, investigate root causes, and help ensure reliable services.
  • Design, prototype and evaluate system concepts, software execution environments, performance and reliability.
  • Contribute to and drive research studies in compute systems, cloud architectures, virtualization and AIOps, including collaboration on scientific publications.
  • Automate repetitive tasks, improve workflows and scale infrastructure; work across operations, engineering and research to turn practical challenges into real-world solutions.
The Skills You Bring
  • A research-oriented degree, such as a Ph.D., or equivalent experience in a research-intensive role.
  • Demonstrated research contribution in compute, cloud virtualization or software systems, for example through publications, patents, technical reports or working prototypes.
  • Hands-on Linux administration and systems engineering experience, with a solid understanding of cloud technologies, Kubernetes, data-center operations and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with containers (Docker or Podman) and orchestration with Kubernetes.
  • Ability to research, instrument and maintain compute environments with AI capabilities supporting workflows, monitoring and intelligent observability.
  • A hands-on “doer” mindset; analytical and scientific curiosity; strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis; and a drive to automate and improve workflows.
  • Strong collaboration skills across operational, engineering and research teams.
  • It is an advantage to bring or develop skills in Ansible, Terraform or Helm; advanced OpenStack operations; HPC or accelerators (GPUs, DPUs or FPGAs); and research collaboration or patenting processes.
