Description

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Scientist to join our dynamic team, focusing on the chemical analysis of battery raw materials. This role is critical in ensuring the quality and performance of our cutting-edge battery cells. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in a chemistry lab and be skilled in various analytical techniques, including powder rheology, trace metal analysis, and method validation studies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and advanced testing on cell components, analyzing chemical properties of raw materials (e.g., electrolyte composition, acid, and moisture content)
  • Prepare samples for advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, ICP, GC, IC, powder rheology)
  • Conduct visual inspections using microscopes and measure particle size distribution, moisture content, and other powder properties
  • Perform electrical measurements, prepare solutions for reaction setup, filtration, and manage waste handling
  • Lead instrument installation, calibration, method development, and test validation (MSA, GRR) for analytical methods in cell manufacturing
  • Interpret complex chemical data, create detailed reports, and provide insights for quality operations decision-making
  • Maintain equipment through preventative maintenance, troubleshoot issues, manage inventory, enforce 5S practices, and refine SOPs for lab operations

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or related field, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience in chemical and materials analysis using SEM/EDS, GC-MS, ICP-OES, IC, titration, and pH measurement or equivalent experience
  • Strong understanding of laboratory operations, ensuring a safe and organized working environment
  • Experience in battery manufacturing and testing of cells and raw materials is highly preferred
  • Ability to quickly learn Tesla’s in-house chemical analysis methods, operate specialized equipment, and handle chemicals safely with precise sample preparation
  • High attention to detail, ability to work independently and collaboratively in a project-focused setting, with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and experienced with internal quality systems and laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal) for effective team communication and documentation, with the ability to wear PPE, including PAPR (powered air purifying respirator)
