Amazon's Customer Experience and Business Trends (CXBT) organization is hiring a Business Intelligence Engineer for its Benchmarking, Economics, Analytics and Measurement (BEAM) team. BEAM turns fragmented internal and external data into decision-grade intelligence for senior leaders across Amazon.

This role anchors our Intelligence Engine initiative: the layer that makes BEAM's data and analytical depth pluggable into agent-based surfaces. Rather than building one-off dashboards, you'll build a curated data catalog and reusable analytical assets, then expose them to LLM agents through MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and skills so that stakeholders can ask questions in natural language and get trustworthy, deterministic answers grounded in BEAM's data.

We're looking for a strong BIE who is genuinely excited about the agentic/GenAI shift and understands the mechanics behind it, not just the buzzwords. You should be comfortable designing the data and tooling that make an LLM agent reliable: clean metric stores, well-defined tools/skills, MCP interfaces, and guardrails that keep the agent from hallucinating numbers.

Key job responsibilities
  • Build and maintain the curated data catalog and reusable foundation/metric tables that power BEAM's Intelligence Engine.
  • Design and implement MCP servers and skills that expose BEAM data and analyses to LLM agents for natural-language querying (Text-to-SQL, metric lookup, retrieval).
  • Build deterministic query and metric layers so agents cite and route to real data rather than estimating — including refusal/guardrail behavior for out-of-coverage requests.
  • Develop ETL pipelines and data models (SQL, Python) that turn raw internal + third-party data into analysis-ready assets.
  • Partner with data scientists, economists, and product managers to translate recurring analytical needs into reusable, self-service capabilities.
  • Instrument evaluation and observability so we can measure and improve agent answer quality over time.
About the team
CXBT is a group of diverse functions dedicated to understanding, improving, and influencing customer experience globally, across all of Amazon. We are builders who develop products, services, and data-driven approaches that shape offerings for nearly every Amazon business and customer type — consumers, developers, sellers, brands, employees, investors, streamers, and gamers. We work backwards from customer needs, combine technical and non-technical methods, and track industry and business trends. Our roles span Product Managers, Data Scientists, Economists, Business Intelligence Engineers, Data Engine, Applied Scentist, and Product Manager.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of using SQL, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load), or Oracle experience
  • 5+ years of performing statistical analysis experience
  • 5+ years of developing automated reporting experience
  • 3+ years of processing large, multi-dimensional datasets from multiple sources experience
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data mining, ETL, etc. and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets
  • Hands-on experience building LLM agents and an understanding of the underlying mechanics — MCP (Model Context Protocol), tools/skills, retrieval/RAG, and prompt design.
  • Experience exposing data to agents via MCP servers or building Text-to-SQL / natural-language query interfaces.
  • Understanding of how to make LLM outputs reliable: deterministic query layers, grounding, evaluation, and guardrails against hallucinated numbers.
  • Experience with AWS data services (Redshift, S3, Athena, Glue) and modern data-modeling patterns.
  • Familiarity with retail/e-commerce or benchmarking data and metrics.
