Job Summary
Supports the software engineering team in designing, developing, and testing simple software systems and applications for software enhancements and new products, including cloud-based and internet-related tools. Works within the team to support clients’ project objectives.
This is a graduate-level role for someone at the start of their engineering career. We are looking for potential and appetite over depth of experience — you will be mentored, given structured feedback, and progressively trusted with more complex work.
Essential Functions
- Actively learn software development principles and collaborate effectively with the team.
- Adhere to code standards and our development process while actively improving both coding skill and domain knowledge.
- Perform careful code reviews, seek help when needed, provide transparent status updates, and participate actively in team meetings.
- Progressively handle more complex tickets with input from experienced engineers, gaining independence over time.
- Demonstrate commitment to system hygiene by writing clean, maintainable code, contributing automated tests, and adhering to coding standards.
- Understand the defined software retirement process and adhere to it when necessary.
- Seek out mentorship to grow your own experience, and show clear passion for growing technical expertise within the product domain.
- Contribute to conversations grounded in organisational strategy and principles with teammates when appropriate.
- Use AI tools to support development activities — code generation, testing, debugging, and optimisation — and apply them to automate repetitive tasks and improve quality.
- Maintain awareness of emerging AI trends and best practices to inform continuous learning.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 0–2 years of professional experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of at least one programming language.
- General understanding of software design principles and development tools.
- Working knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git.
- Evidence of coachability: takes feedback well, acts on it, and asks for help early.
- Ability to learn quickly and work in a collaborative team environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including with cross-functional teams.
- Based in Melbourne and able to work from the Melbourne office three days per week.
Desired
- Prior internship, placement, or early professional experience in a software engineering environment.
- Experience with web application development.
- Familiarity with agile or scrum methodologies and DevOps tooling.
- Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
