Your New Role...
Warner Bros. Discovery is hiring a Software Engineer II to join the CNN Digital Global Editorial Support team. This is a great opportunity for an individual that is passionate about supporting digital products and editors around the world. This team is tier 1 support for every CNN product, service and tool. We also monitor product performance and stability and support tentpole live events and coverage of breaking news.
As a Software Engineer II, you will work with cross-functional teams to triage and troubleshoot production incidents, and support editorial teams' day-to-day workflows. You will work with both front-end and back-end systems and services. You also have the opportunity to work on building projects to support CNN’s web products. Your team works with product, design, revenue and technical teams across both the CNN and WBD organizations. You will play a crucial part on the team as you will be responsible for responding to production issues, improving automation, and finding ways to improve and enhance daily workflows.
Your Role Accountabilities...
Serve Incident Response by being responsible for triaging and troubleshooting bugs and production incidents, supporting editorial workflows and the operational maintenance of digital products.
- Communicate effectively with editorial, engineering, product, and design team members to ensure product expectations for internal and external users are met.
- Support live news events.
- Collaborate with team members in the planning and execution of new features and products.
- Build and maintain dashboards, synthetic tests, and automated alerting to strengthen operational monitoring.
- Participate in the on-call rotation, including shift coverage throughout the day and weekend on-call approximately every 4th weekend, escalating through defined levels when needed.
- Thoroughly document your own contributions and, where necessary, the contributions of others.
Qualifications and Experience...
- 2+ years full stack development experience with an emphasis on front-end development, including Java/JavaScript, HTML/CSS & Responsive design.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause investigation skills — comfortable replicating an issue, reviewing the codebase, and narrowing it down to an API or database problem.
- Hands-on experience with AWS services (e.g. S3, EKS vs. ECS) and other Cloud Platforms, including navigating cloud consoles for troubleshooting.
- Understand engineering best practices, design patterns, testing and alerting.
- Development experience building fully responsive designs that work across all screen resolutions and browsers.
- Experience with Cursor, Gemini, or Claude tools, used to build automation and support incident response.
The Nice to Haves...
- Editorial programming or journalism experience.
- Experience developing or working with a publishing CMS.
- Creating automated solutions to user needs.
- Experience with monitoring, alerting and synthetic tests.
- Experience with live streaming events.
- Familiarity with programming languages, frameworks, platforms, API's and/or SDKs.
- Knowledge of Operations, CI/CD, DevOps, and observability tools (e.g. Datadog, CloudWatch).
