Software Development Manager, SageMaker AI - Studio IDE
Amazon SageMaker Studio is the fully integrated development environment tailored for machine learning, and is growing rapidly to be the tool of choice for machine learning scientists and practitioners all around the world. All AI/ML development activities including notebooks, experiment management, automatic model creation, debugging, and model and data drift detection can be performed within SageMaker Studio. We support many popular frameworks for deep learning and we're rapidly expanding our IDE offerings to include both web-based and local development experiences.
We are seeking an experienced Software Development Manager to lead a team of engineers building the agentic guided experience on SageMaker Studio. You will own the end-to-end development and delivery of IDE experiences - including JupyterLab, Code Editor, and emerging local IDE integrations - that serve millions of data scientists, ML engineers, and developers worldwide.
Key job responsibilities
As a Software Development Manager on the SageMaker Studio IDE team, you will:
* Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software development engineers building highly scalable, cloud-based IDE infrastructure and experiences
* Own the technical roadmap and strategy for one or more IDE product areas, balancing innovation with operational excellence
* Drive the design, development, testing, and deployment of distributed services that power ML development environments at AWS scale
* Partner with product management, UX, and peer engineering teams to define product features, system architecture, and best practices that enable a quality product
* Work closely with external customers, scientists, and other engineering teams to investigate design approaches, prototype new technology, and evaluate technical feasibility
* Operate in an Agile/Scrum environment, establishing team processes that deliver high quality software with predictable cadence
* Hire, develop, and retain top engineering talent; foster an inclusive team culture that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship
* Ensure operational excellence across your team's services, including on-call, operational metrics, and security/compliance standards
A day in the life
* Develop and motivate your team (~8 HC), ensure that they are empowered to move quickly, and remove barriers to their success while they deliver features and content
* Define and attend recurring mechanisms like standups, ops meetings, and status reporting
* Set direction for the team and balance short-term vs. long-term initiatives
* Collaborate with Applied Scientists and PM to build features on IDEs
* Collaborate with PMs, PEs, and other team SDMs/SDEs to manage project launches, clarify roadmaps, and prioritize features

Basic Qualifications
- 6+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- First-hand ML experience is not required, but interest and passion is. That innate interest/passion will be the difference between the content delivery portion of the job being fun/exciting/motivating or a struggle.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of engineering team management experience
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
