PayPal, Inc. seeks Senior Software Engineer in San Jose, CA

Job Duties: Design, develop and deploy scalable, fault-tolerant banking platforms, and create architecture supporting millions of daily transactions. Build and implement idempotent systems with exactly-once processing guarantees. Debug complex production issues under time pressure, write comprehensive documentation and runbooks, and conduct post-mortems and implement preventive measures. Apply currency conversion logic for international payments, develop settlement systems for merchant payouts, and optimize transaction routing based on cost and speed. Implement automated testing frameworks, perform code reviews with focus on security and reliability, and ensure high code coverage and quality standards. Maintain PayPal's ACH processing engine for bank transfers and build features for instant transfers and wallet funding. Develop APIs consumed by PayPal mobile/web applications to support Venmo and other PayPal-family products. Connect to bank partners' APIs (Chase, Wells Fargo, etc.), integrate with payment networks (Visa, Mastercard, Nacha), and build webhooks for real time payment notifications. Work with Product Managers, Compliance and Risk teams, Infrastructure teams, and external banking partners to translate requirements into technical solutions, maintain regulatory requirements, promote platform scaling, and interface with vendors. Partial telecommuting permitted from a commutable distance.

Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field plus three years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related field plus five years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.

Special Skill Requirements:

Example: Experience designing and developing large-scale software applications using Object-Oriented Design and Java (1 year)

1.              Experience designing and developing backend software applications using Java, including object-oriented design, multithreading, and performance optimization (3 years).

2.              Experience working with relational database management systems such as Oracle, including schema design, complex SQL queries, and transaction management (2 years).

3.              Experience architecting and solutioning high-level and low-level designs for end-to-end payment product development, specifically bank settlement products including Direct Deposit, clearing, and returns processing (3 years).

4.              Experience working with payment platforms, specifically payment settlement platforms supporting funds movement, reconciliation, and settlement lifecycle management (2 years).

5.              Experience developing or supporting Direct Deposit products such as Top Up or wallet funding solutions (2 years).

6.              Experience building settlement platforms and frameworks involving distributed file processing for returns, rejects, and acknowledgment files from banking entities or clearing houses (3 years).

7.              Experience building and tuning distributed Java-based applications for scale and performance, specifically for bank settlement processing and mapping settlements to cash and accounting ledgers (3 years).

8.              Experience building Java-based payment processing solutions to automate settlements against payables and receivables accounting ledgers (2 years).

9.              Experience debugging and triaging complex production issues and developing automated prevention, detection, and correction tools using Java or related technologies (3 years).

10.           Experience documenting high-level and low-level system designs using UML diagrams (2 years).

The base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring. The expected range of pay for this role by location is: 

Primary Location | Pay Range: 

San Jose, California | Salary: $169,576.00-243,500.00per annum. 40 hours per week; M-F, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Additional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
