Student Training in Engineering Program (STEP) Intern, 2025

Google is invested in increasing the number of future computer scientists and software developers, and the Student Training in Engineering Program (STEP) Japan aims to bridge the gap between academic studies and a professional internship. This internship program offers students the opportunity to work on a software project alongside other STEP interns, with the support of full-time Googlers and a mentor.

STEP Japan is divided into two parts: Development Course and an internship.

Development Course (Optional)

The first part of the program is aimed at developing students’ technical and soft skills. We will hold a total of 8 classes, with the goal of providing students knowledge that will support them in their future studies and career. Please note, those who cannot participate in the Development Course can still apply to the STEP internship.

• Start Date: May 15, 2026

• Course Duration: 8 classes held once a week, every Friday, 5pm (3 hours long).

• Location: Google Shibuya office

• Language: Class will be held mainly in Japanese

STEP Internship

The second half of the program will be a paid internship, in which successful applicants will be assigned to a core software project. You will work with a team of Googlers and will be mentored by a Google engineer to guide you through your internship. Intern projects will be determined based on the experience, skills, and interests of each student.

• Start Date: August 2026 onwards

• Internship Duration: 8 - 17 weeks (length and start date may vary depending on project scope and student’s availability)

• Location: Google Shibuya Office

Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge gained in computer science courses to real-world problems.
• Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution to effectively solve problems.
• Develop scripts to automate routine tasks.
• Create and support a productive and innovative team. Work with peers, managers, and teams.

Minimum qualifications:

• Currently in a Bachelor's degree program.

Preferred qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a program majoring in Computer Science or a related field.
• Programming experience in C, C++, Java, or Python.
