As the Principal Data Scientist for Discover, you will lead the data science team for Google's global feed products, including Discover as well as Ember and a high-priority, 0-to-1 AI feed product. You will act not just as a data leader but also as a product and business leader, driving ranking, experience, and content strategy to unlock true product-market fit and projected growth. This is a high-leverage role where you will make autonomous decisions regarding personalization and ranking strategies for products with billions of users.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $272,000-$383,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration across ranking, product experience, and content ecosystem teams to ensure seamless execution and alignment on shared objectives.
  • Ensure a strong metrics foundation and provide technical oversight for ranking and personalization strategies to scale the Discover business.
  • Lead the development and implementation of advanced analytics techniques, including predictive modeling and AI, for recommendation systems.
  • Establish KPIs, metrics, and performance dashboards to monitor engagement and identify areas for improvement where engagement lags behind major competitors.
  • Be able to programmatically ensure quality and accuracy across the Data Science organization and scale a specialized team of 19 data scientists.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 15 years of experience in data science or other quantitative fields such as: statistics, machine learning, software engineering, or ML engineering.
  • Experience in using data insights to drive product excellence.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent.
  • Experience building feed products and leading innovation in recommendation systems and personalization.
  • Innovative problem solver who turns ambiguity into clear solutions, comfortable with new technology and out-of-the-box thinking.
  • Strong communicator and creative with data presentations to executive and business audiences.
