Principal Application Software Engineer
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is seeking an experienced Principal Application Software Engineer to lead the AI Platform and Productivity Engineering organization. This role will own the design and operating standards for the AI control plane and data plane, Codex enablement, plugin strategy, Skills and GPT guidance, memory strategy, model routing. The role will also own AI cost, token, and usage intelligence—including usage telemetry, cost attribution, forecasting, token budgets, threshold alerts, showback/chargeback, and model-cost optimization. By providing the data and technical patterns behind dynamic model enforcement, the role enables leaders to distinguish productive AI investment from avoidable spend while allowing teams to scale AI safely and efficiently.
Leads platform projects crossing multiple teams, evolving runtimes or middleware patterns for interoperability and multi-tenant scale. Diagnoses and resolves complex cross-service issues; enforces versioning, compatibility, and safe rollout practices. Drives observability standards, capacity planning, and resilience patterns across several workloads. Produces migration guides and adoption playbooks that raise ecosystem consistency and developer experience.

US: Hiring Range in USD from: $99,600 to $209,500 per annum. May be eligible for bonus and equity.

Key Responsibilities
Designs, delivers, and operates scalable, secure software solutions by leading requirements analysis, architecture and code reviews, API integration and lifecycle strategy, complex debugging and performance optimization, and comprehensive testing, logging, monitoring, and observability practices.
Design and development for control-plane/data-plane architecture, Codex architecture, model routing,
- Define enterprise technical guidance for plugin, Skill, GPT, custom application.
- Leads cross-team evolution of middleware and runtime standards, defining safe versioning, deprecation, and rollout practices while driving shared observability, SLO, and resilience patterns.
- Develops scalable software, systems, and services; recommends project and design scope; applies architectural standards and performance optimization; and coaches engineers while collaborating with stakeholders to align solutions with the broader technical architecture.
- Partners with stakeholders and customers to investigate and resolve complex product issues, communicate short- and long-term solutions, improve defect-handling processes, and translate customer feedback into product enhancements.
- Ensures secure, compliant, and reliable software delivery by enforcing engineering standards and peer reviews, coaching developers on best practices, implementing secure coding controls, and driving automated maintenance, patching, testing, debugging, and operational improvements.
- Define dynamic model-enforcement patterns that optimize cost, quality, risk, and performance.
- Own usage telemetry, model-cost optimization, forecasting, token budgets, threshold alerts,
- Provide the data foundation and technical recommendations that enable leadership to identify high-value AI usage, and make informed investment decisions.
- Establish token and context optimization patterns, including model selection, caching, context management, and workload-specific routing.
- Partner with engineering and product teams to ensure shared AI capabilities are secure, observable, reliable, scalable, and easy to adopt.
Minimum Job Qualifications Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's of Technology (B.Tech) Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Mathematics, Physics, or related field AND 7 years of experience in software development
- 5+ years of experience designing and delivering scalable distributed systems, APIs, developer platforms, or cloud services.
- 3+ years of experience with cloud platforms such as OCI, AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- 3+ years of experience with programming languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript, Go
- Experience with production operations, including observability, logging, monitoring, incident response, service reliability, and performance optimization.
- Experience working across engineering, architecture, security, product, and business stakeholders to deliver shared platform capabilities.
- 4 years of experience with databases.
Preferred Skills
AI Skills and Experience
- Experience building, integrating, or operating AI-enabled applications, generative AI platforms, developer tools, or enterprise productivity solutions.
- Experience with LLM application patterns, including prompt design, retrieval-augmented generation, tool/function calling, agents, memory, evaluations, and model routing.
- Experience designing AI control-plane/data-plane architecture, reusable plugins, Skills, GPTs, shared services, or enterprise AI enablement platforms.
- Experience implementing AI governance, security, privacy, model-access controls, policy-driven model selection, or certification processes.
- Experience with AI cost optimization, including token and context management, usage telemetry, cost attribution, forecasting, budgeting, caching, and model-performance optimization.
