Senior Software Engineering Manager, Pixel, Core Infrastructure

Software Engineering Managers have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of Engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure Engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.
In this role, you will lead the team responsible for building the tools, systems, and processes which improve our overall engineering efficiency and increase the quality of our products. You will develop and execute a roadmap for organization-wide impact. You will bring industry foresight, collaborate and influence across teams, platforms and systems to deliver best-in-class software quality for our Pixel portfolio of devices. You will also manage a global team of engineers who are driving cloud, software, and embedded work.
The Google Pixel team focuses on designing and delivering the world's most helpful mobile experience. The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000-$349,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Provide the technical goal and strategy for Pixel Infrastructure. Design and lead a multi-year technical roadmap, balancing short and long-term technology investments.
- Review technical design from the team and guide technical discussions. Review experiments and guide project directions.
- Lead and manage a team of engineers over a global footprint. Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role, and meet regularly to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
- Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
- Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in embedded, cloud, or release management systems.
- 5 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- 15 years of experience in engineering with a track record of technical innovation with large-scale user facing products.
- 8 years of experience programming in Java, C++, RUST or Python.
- Experience leading large teams, while creating a shared sense of goal or purpose, and promoting engineering and product excellence.
- Ability to think and develop product solutions.
