Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

In this role, you will be responsible for enhancing the development and deployment experiences for intelligent applications on Pixel and Android, leveraging the latest on-device and server based models. This includes tasks such as platform design, model training, evaluation methodologies, metrics design, and data analysis. You will be collecting, training, and evaluating data and ML quality for a variety of use cases, working with teams across Google to design and implement new infrastructure and tooling for Pixel and Android AI development.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

Responsibilities

Expand the ability to port AI features into a multiple of languages and countries in a quality and efficient manner.
Design tools or frameworks to enhance intelligent applications development, with focus on model evaluation, quality, and performance on Pixel/Android in a private and safe manner.
Craft language and locale specific evaluation datasets, metrics, and pipelines to understand, evaluate and enhance the behavior of our models, platform and algorithms. Support a multitude of user facing features that rely on the quality and performance of these algorithms, as running on-device or server-side and across different devices.
Train or re-train models based on the latest base and tuned models to improve features across a multiple of locales in a maintainable way.
Clarify product and technical ambiguities with the prototyping and metrics driven development processes.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
3 years of experience with one or more of the following: Speech/audio (e.g., technology duplicating and responding to the human voice), reinforcement learning (e.g., sequential decision making), ML infrastructure, or specialization in another ML field.
3 years of experience with ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, optimization, data processing, debugging).

Preferred qualifications:

Experience in one or more of the following areas: ML language data collection and evaluations, mobile algorithms, Large Language Models/GenAI tuning, Android development.
Experience launching one or multiple AI/ML-powered user-facing products across locales/countries.
Experience working across US and Asia.
Knowledge of the Android or Pixel development ecosystem.
