Job Title: Backend Engineer (CoreAI)
Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands (Hybrid)
Team: CoreAI at eBay
About the team
CoreAI at eBay builds and operates large-scale AI systems that power experiences for hundreds of millions of users globally. We develop end-to-end AI platforms and services—from data pipelines and model training to real-time inference and evaluation—enabling product teams across eBay to deliver smarter, faster, and safer experiences. You will be at the cutting edge of the AI revolution, working with state-of-the-art technologies and shipping production systems at massive scale. The position is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in the office.
What you’ll do
Design, build, and operate backend services for AI/ML systems, including data ingestion, feature stores, model training pipelines, and low-latency inference services.
Own production-grade APIs and microservices that integrate AI capabilities into eBay products and marketplaces.
Implement scalable, cost-efficient, and reliable distributed systems (e.g., streaming, batch processing, autoscaling, service orchestration).
Collaborate with ML researchers and product engineers to translate models into robust, secure, and maintainable production services.
Optimize performance for high throughput and low latency; monitor, observe, and continuously improve system reliability (SLOs, alerting, on-call).
Ensure data and model quality through rigorous evaluation, testing, and CI/CD best practices.
Contribute to architecture decisions, documentation, and engineering standards across CoreAI.
Mentor peers, participate in code reviews, and help foster a culture of technical excellence.
What we’re looking for
Strong backend engineering experience building distributed systems and APIs in production.
Proficiency in Java, Python, and Kotlin programming languages
Experience with cloud infrastructure and container orchestration (e.g., AWS/GCP/Azure, Kubernetes).
Familiarity with data platforms and streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Flink/Spark, object stores, SQL/NoSQL).
Experience deploying and operating ML services (batch and real-time), model serving frameworks, and feature stores is a plus.
Solid understanding of system design, networking, performance optimization, and observability (metrics, logs, traces).
Knowledge of ML fundamentals and MLOps practices (versioning, CI/CD for models, A/B testing, evaluation) is a plus; curiosity and willingness to learn are essential.
Strong problem-solving skills, ownership mindset, and ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
Bachelor’s/Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
4+ years of professional experience
Nice to have
Experience in Spark and Hadoop.
Experience with retrieval systems, ranking, recommendations, search, trust & safety, NLP, or generative AI.
Experience with GPU/accelerator orchestration and model optimization (quantization, distillation, Triton/TensorRT).
Experience with privacy, security, and compliance in AI systems.
Prior work at large scale (millions of users, petabyte data, high QPS).
What we offer
Impact at global scale: Ship AI systems that touch hundreds of millions of users across eBay’s marketplace.
Cutting-edge environment: Work with state-of-the-art tooling, modern ML/LLM stacks, and opportunities to collaborate with leading researchers.
