Software Engineer III, Instances API, Google Cloud

Virtual Machines are the workhorses of Google Cloud, powering everything from global enterprises to groundbreaking AI/ML research. The GCE Instances API AI/ML team builds and manages the critical control plane services that handle the lifecycle of millions of these VMs, directly enabling the AI/ML revolution on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
As a Software Engineer, you will address complex distributed systems challenges at a massive scale, working on the core services that allow customers to deploy, manage, and scale their AI/ML workloads efficiently and reliably. Your work will directly impact a set of customers at cloud technology, from startups to large enterprises.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and operate the highly reliable, large-scale distributed systems forming the control plane for GCE Virtual Machines, with a focus on enabling seamless AI/ML workload execution.
- Drive the analysis, design, and implementation of solutions for orchestrating the lifecycle of millions of VMs, addressing the unique demands of AI/ML applications and specialized hardware (e.g., GPUs, TPUs).
- Enhance the automation, scalability, and resilience of the Instances API and associated services to deliver a zero operations cloud experience for our users.
- Collaborate with partner teams across Google Cloud to deliver solutions for complex customer use cases in the AI/ML space.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design to testing, deployment, and maintenance.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
- 2 years of experience with software development in Java, C++, Python programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
Preferred qualifications:
- 2 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
- Experience in designing, building, and operating highly scalable, reliable, and distributed systems.
- Experience with API design and development (e.g., RESTful APIs).
- Experience with public cloud platforms and developing cloud-native applications or services.
- Proficiency in Java and its ecosystem for building backend services.
