Staff Backend Engineer (L26) – Buyer Experience Platform

Location: Toronto, Canada - Hybrid 1-2 days onsite

About the Role

The Buyer Experience Platform team at eBay builds the backend systems that power critical buyer journeys across search, discovery, trust, checkout, and post-purchase experiences.

As a Staff Software Engineer you will be part of a team responsible for building out the newest eBay experience - live shopping platform: eBay Live. Live shopping naturally fits into the eBay ethos -- focused largely on unique items, collectibles and fashion, and enabling direct communication between buyers and sellers.

This is a relatively new trend in the US and Europe, growing quickly, and is already broadly established in APAC.

We are looking to hire a passionate, collaborative and motivated Backend Staff Software Engineer, who will help us develop and evolve eBay Live to be a market leader in live shopping and become a key part of the global eBay platform.

Join us to make an impact on one of the world’s largest e-commerce websites.

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will operate as a senior technical leader—driving architecture, system design, and long-term platform evolution for large-scale, cloud-native distributed systems used by millions of buyers globally.

This role is suited for an engineer with deep expertise in object-oriented backend development, a strong background in distributed systems, and a passion for improving reliability, performance, and scalability at platform scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the architectural design and development of scalable, highly available backend services that support buyer-facing experiences

  • Serve as a technical authority within the Buyer Experience Platform, influencing system design decisions across teams and domains

  • Build and evolve backend systems using Java (primary) and additional OOP languages such as Python, Go, or C++

  • Design, deploy, and operate distributed systems in cloud environments (GCP preferred; AWS or Azure acceptable)

  • Partner cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering leaders to shape technical strategy and roadmaps, balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform health

  • Lead delivery of complex, cross-team initiatives, providing technical direction and mentorship to senior engineers

  • Ensure systems meet high standards for performance, availability, resiliency, security, and accessibility

  • Promote modern engineering practices including shift-left quality, automation, CI/CD, and operational excellence

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • 8+ years of backend engineering experience, with sustained impact on large-scale production systems

  • Deep expertise in Java and strong proficiency in additional object-oriented languages such as Python, Go, or C++

  • Proven experience designing and operating distributed, service-oriented architectures

  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native systems in GCP, AWS, or Azure

  • Demonstrated ability to lead architectural design and influence technical decisions across multiple teams

  • Experience owning and delivering complex software systems end-to-end

  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to technical leadership
