Job Description
Join the Customer Support Technology team building the backend systems that power eBay’s global customer service experience. You will design and implement scalable APIs, contribute to workflow frameworks and automation services, and raise the bar on reliability, performance, and observability across a 20‑year codebase that continues to evolve.
This is an IC role with a strong hands‑on focus—expect to spend ~75% of your time designing and coding, with the remainder on reviews, tooling, and cross‑team collaboration. You’ll own components end‑to‑end, write high‑quality tests, and partner closely with product, SRE, and analytics to improve agent productivity and customer outcomes.
Must‑Have
BS/MS in CS, EE, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
4–8 years of backend engineering experience (Java focused) building distributed services and public/internal APIs.
Proficiency in Java (11+), Spring Boot, and REST API design; familiarity with SOAP and GraphQL a plus.
Messaging & stream processing concepts (e.g., Kafka, Flink or equivalents).
Datastores: Oracle and at least one NoSQL system; strong SQL fundamentals.
Agile & DevOps: CI/CD (Jenkins/GitHub Actions), containers (Docker/Kubernetes), IaC basics, monitoring/alerting.
Quality discipline: unit/integration tests (JUnit/TestNG), code coverage, code reviews, and clean code practices.
Ability to translate requirements into clean, efficient, extensible, maintainable code; solid debugging/problem‑solving.
We value engineers who think in systems, communicate clearly, and ship pragmatically.
Preferred
Experience with customer‑support–adjacent systems (case/contact management, workflow orchestration, SaaS integrations).
Familiarity with AI‑assisted development and automation (agent assist, summarization, test generation).
Exposure to observability stacks (Prometheus/Grafana/Splunk), OAuth2/OIDC security, and zero‑downtime releases.
What You’ll Do
Design, build, and evolve backend APIs and services for agent tools, workflow engines, and automation platforms.
Write well‑tested code; define observability (metrics/logs/traces) and contribute to SLOs with SRE.
Profile and improve latency, throughput, and reliability; assist with on‑call rotations (follow‑the‑sun).
Review PRs, author design docs, and partner with product to translate functional requirements.
Triage and reduce tech debt, participate in post‑incident reviews, and drive preventative fixes.
Mentor juniors or led a small workstream as a tech lead within a squad.
