Overview

As a Data Scientist on the Foundation AIOps team, you will build the "brain" of our autonomous troubleshooting engine. You will develop AI Agents that don't just predict failures but actively investigate them—orchestrating diagnostic tools, reasoning through complex telemetry, and delivering precise Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to minimize system downtime.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Agentic RCA Frameworks: Design and deploy autonomous agents (using LangGraph, CrewAI, or ReAct patterns) that navigate observability APIs to investigate incidents and determine root causes.

  • Tool-Augmented Reasoning: Enable LLM-based agents to interact with the environment (e.g., executing kubectl, querying SQL, or analyzing Git diffs) to gather real-time evidence.

  • Anomaly Intelligence: Develop high-precision Time-Series and Log-Mining models to feed high-fidelity signals into the agentic reasoning loop.

  • Evaluation & Alignment: Establish benchmarks for agent diagnostic accuracy and implement Human-in-the-loop feedback to refine the agent's "Chain-of-Thought" logic.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)

    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across engineering, and product management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).

  • 1+ year(s) experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

  • Proven track record of deploying Agent Systems in a production environment, specifically handling complex reasoning tasks or autonomous decision-making.

  • Experience with LLM Fine-tuning (PEFT, LoRA) or advanced RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) optimization to improve domain-specific technical reasoning.

This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
